Panaeolus olivaceus

Panaeolus olivaceus F.H.Müller (1945)

synonyms:
Panaeolus castaneifolius (Murrill) A.H. Sm.
Panaeolina castaneifolia (Murrill) Bon;
Panaeolina castaneifolia (Murrill) Ew. Gerhardt

Macroscopic feat.:
  • Cap/Pileus: 1- 3(4) cm across, Distinctly campanulate then subhemispheric to convex, becoming broadly conic, not fully expanding, incurved margin when young, dark smoky-grayish to dark cinnamon, drying to a straw-yellow or slightly olive-gray color, remaining more reddish-brown towards the center, hygrophanous, smooth, sometimes striated or finely corrugated, flesh thick and firm.
  • Gills/Lamellae: Adnate to adnexed, close, thin, pallid, mottled, slightly olive-greenish, becoming dark purplish gray-black in age, edge whitish.
  • Stem/Stipe: 4- 6(7.5) cm by 3- 4(6) mm thick, equal to slightly tapering at the base, hollow, brittle, pruinose and slightly striate, no veil remnants. Grayish to ochraceous, tan or purple at the base.

Microscopic feat.:
  • Basidio/Spores: Black, slightly roughened, 12 - 15(17) x 7-8,5 µm, elliptic, rugose or verrucose.
  • Basidia: 4-spored. 24-28 x 10-12 µm.
  • Cheilocystidia: (20)24 - 30(38) x (5)7-10 µm, abundant, neck often flexuous and apices usually obtuse, thin walled and hyaline.
  • Pleurocistidia: Rare or absent, not projecting beyond plane of basidia.

Habitat: Grows scattered to gregariously

Distribution: Well kept grass, in lawns, parks and around well manicured buildings. Some believe that there is a correlation between this species and dog stool, but there is no hard evidence to back that up. It has been collected in the U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Canada's Quebec and in the United Kingdom

Season: Late summer through December.

Dosage:
  • Lvl. 1 - 1.2g
  • Lvl. 2 - 2.1g
  • Lvl. 3 - 3.8g
  • Lvl. 4 - 5.8g
  • Lvl. 5 - 8.0g

Comment: Latently psilocybin, according to Ola'h (1969), and when so, weak. Some but not all collections of this species contain psilocybin. Distinguished from Panaeolus foenisecii by the color of the mature gills and spore deposit, which are very dark purplish gray-black.

Notes: It is easily mistaken for Panaeolus cinctulus and can be distinguished from that species by its more campanulate cap shape when young and slightly roughened spores.
